"Independence Cay is designed to provide services for those in need and those who wish to better themselves and provide uniformity and accountability of these services."
Our Mission
Independence Cay offers a community soup kitchen providing full, hot meals six days per week to about 20 individuals. Visitors are supplied with a hot meal and, at the same time, offered showering facilities, feminine and personal hygiene products, and washer/dryer machines with which to do personal laundry, resulting in well-fed, clean, healthier and more presentable individuals better prepared to blend in with this city’s general public, visitors, employers and law-enforcement. Independence Cay also offers Inclement Weather Shelter for up to 20 individuals during periods of dangerous, extreme cold, heavy rain and other life-threatening weather events. This service was particularly appropriate in the winter of 2010 - in this period, a record 460 overnight stays and nearly 1,000 meals were provided to homeless people.
About Us
Independence Cay
helping people help themselves

We are a transitional housing, inclement weather shelter, community soup kitchen and provider of other services for men, women and children who have been temporarily displaced from traditional permanent housing. We are the only existing provider of these services in the Upper and Middle Keys, and for many, their only option during this tremendously difficult economic climate. We help people help themselves.
