Independence Cay also provides motel rooms for women and children in emergency situations. Independence Cay has a Transitional Housing component for up to six displaced males. This program has strict rules against drinking and drugging, fighting, and loafing. All clients are required to work and maintain a strict curfew. Illegal activity or any breach of rules results in discharge from the facility. Independence Cay offers referral services to area socialservices providers such as Southernmost Homeless Assistance League (SHAL), Salvation Army and KAIR; government agencies such as Monroe County Social Services and the Department of Veterans Affairs; healthcare agencies such as the Guidance and Care Center, CHI, Rural Health Network, Fishermen’s Hospital and Keys Area AHEC; and a host of faith based organizations and churches.
