As part of HUD’s National Annual Homeless Survey, on January 26, 2010, SHAL and volunteers from Independence Cay conducted a Point in Time (PIT) count of homeless individuals in the City of Marathon. This was done by counting the number of people in homeless camps and living in the streets. This count did not include those individuals living in temporary or sub-standard living conditions caused by natural disasters such as the 2005 hurricane season or people affected by lay-offs and job reductions in our city forcing families to share single dwellings with multiple groups or families.
